Vision Boards for 2023

As we start the new year, January can bring about lots of mixed feelings and varied experiences. However, we are still standing firm in our belief that a “new year” does not have to mean a “new you”. There is lots of talk in the media to change and better yourself in this new year, but this “urgent demand” is not helpful nor is it coming from a genuine place when many resolutions involve altering the body through rigorous workouts and/or dieting.

Instead, one of the ideas that we shared in our December newsletter outlined creating and using a vision board to guide and inspire your thinking as we kick off 2023! Unlike strict and rigid “rules” that many New Year’s resolutions tend to become, vision boards are typically more general and emphasize personal goals, aspirations, and dreams that you want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Vision boards are also a great visual representation of your creativity and unique approach to how you envision your future! They can be created using all sorts of media: magazine clippings, paint, photographs, ticket stubs or other paper souvenirs… sky’s the limit!

The most rewarding component of vision boards is the physical reminder of what you want to do with yourself in the months to come. It’s not unusual for New Year’s resolutions to feel extremely “out of reach” 2-3 months into the year… and chances are high that you might even forget about the goals you set for your resolutions on January 1st! However, with a vision board, you have a concrete reminder of the personal goals you want to accomplish! Additionally, vision boards are helpful in that they bring your thoughts to fruition on paper — because we know that it’s sometimes difficult to bring the pen to paper and write out what we want. With a vision board, you can let your creativity flow freely and your thoughts, goals, dreams, etc. will manifest themselves in whatever way you choose!

Now that you have a better idea of what a vision board entails and how it can help you move forward in 2023, the most important part of a vision board is keeping your finished product where you’ll see it often. Then, on the long, dreary days in March when you might be feeling a little lost and stressed… your goals and motivations are all right there for you to continue working towards. We are all just simply trying our best each day… happy vision board making!

May you envision yourself extending nothing but compassion and kindness to yourself and others in your community this year!

Seasonal Recipe: Creamy Vegetable Chowder

Indulging in warm, comforting foods during this time of year does wonders towards helping you stay nourished, both physically and emotionally! Again, the purpose of sharing these seasonal recipes on our monthly newsletters is to highlight produce that is readily available and to underscore food freedom; we firmly believe that all foods fit and creating space for diverse meal choices should be a fun and unique experience for everyone! Additionally, by choosing seasonal produce to cook with, you are actively choosing to support a more sustainable approach towards food stability in your community.

Some seasonal produce to enjoy this January includes a lot of hearty, root vegetables: beets, celery root, collards, kale, leeks, parsnips, and potatoes. With that being said, this month’s recipe is creamy vegetable chowder! This short but delicious recipe is not only comforting for those long winter days, but you can also double or triple the ingredients to enjoy it all week long! We hope you savor this yummy winter soup with family and friends!

Thank you for engaging with this month’s content; we hope you all continue to have a wonderful start to 2023!

Take care and be WELL!
