The Benefits of Period Tracker Apps for Female Athletes

EMPOWERING female athletes. The Benefits of Period Apps for Girls in Athletics

As a coach for girls' athletics, I understand the profound impact that hormonal changes can have on the performance and well-being of young athletes. When I was competing in middle and high school athletics, there were NO conversations about how periods and breast development could have impact on self-esteem, athletic performance, physical changes, and/or psychological changes - sometimes called MOOD SWINGS. The silence around these topics were far from helpful.

Puberty is a transformative period marked by hormonal shifts, and it's crucial to initiate conversations that empower young girls with the knowledge they need to navigate these changes confidently. One invaluable tool in this journey is the use of period tracking apps. Our bodies are incredible, constantly evolving entities, and the menstrual cycle plays a pivotal role in this intricate dance of hormones. By discussing the menstrual cycle openly and honestly, we provide our athletes with the understanding they need to embrace their changing bodies. This knowledge is not just about demystifying biology, but it is also about fostering a true sense of self-assurance and awareness for one’s intricate body.

Period tracking apps become indispensable allies in this endeavor. These apps offer a user-friendly interface that help girls track their menstrual cycles effortlessly. By knowing where they are in their cycle, athletes gain valuable insights into their hormonal fluctuations at each of the four phases. This awareness allows them to make informed decisions - along with their coaches - about their training, sleep, and nutrition, optimizing their performance throughout the month.

The benefits extend beyond the physical into the psychological domain. When girls comprehend the ebb and flow of their hormones, they can approach competitions with confidence instead of dread. Understanding that certain phases of the menstrual cycle may impact energy levels, mood, and stamina, empowers athletes to adapt their training regimens accordingly, ensuring they perform at their best consistently.

Furthermore, the use of period tracking apps creates a unique opportunity for open dialogue within the team. By encouraging discussions around menstrual health, we break down societal taboos and create an environment where girls feel comfortable sharing their experiences. This open communication fosters a supportive team culture, where athletes can learn from one another and celebrate the diversity of their bodies.

Embracing period tracking apps as a coach for girls' athletics is a powerful step towards holistic athlete development. By providing girls with the knowledge and tools to navigate their menstrual cycles, we empower them to compete with confidence, optimize their training, and foster a sense of camaraderie within the team. It also allows for girls to move into their own as young women in a society that would otherwise want to keep silence around the natural and cyclical nature of the female system.

Let’s get PERIODS out in the open, ensuring that our athletes not only excel on the field — but also thrive in every aspect of their lives.
